About

J. Newman Pritchard

J. Newman Pritchard, or Jake, is a writer living in Chicago, Illinois. His horror and fantasy stories bring the reader into strange worlds that range from the whimsical to the terrifying. Most of his writing chooses to live somewhere in between.

“I am all in a sea of wonders. I doubt; I fear; I think strange things, which I dare not confess to my own soul.”

Bram Stoker

Jake is originally from Memphis, Tennessee, where he grew up reading the works of fantasy writers like JRR Tolkein and science fiction classics like those from HG Wells and Jules Verne.

Then, one fateful day, he opened the pages of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and the Count with all of the other children of the night have never left Jake’s imaginations. He started writing, as many people did, during the pandemic, and found a peace and excitement in that art like nothing else.

“But dreams come through stone walls, light up dark rooms, or darken light ones, and their persons make their exits and their entrances as they please, and laugh at locksmiths.”

J Sheridan le Fanu

Jake currently works for Loyola Unviersity Chicago, where he is also a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in sociology. In the rare moments when he isn’t working, studying, or writing, Jake can be found laughing with his friends, desperately trying to find anywhere near Chicago that isn’t too flat for a good hike, or rewatching National Treasure (2004).

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”

Ursula K Le Guin

Jake’s work has been published in Four Tulips Magazine, and he has several other projects in the works. In the meantime, you can access some of his written work via the Newsletter or on the Stories page. Future publications will be posted on this site, and announced to the Newsletter.
